Baby Training – October 27, 2015

  • Companion: Elder Sirrine
  • Area: Jennings Branch, Louisiana

Well I didn’t get transferred so I’m still in Welsh Louisiana, and I thought I was done with training…. But I guess not! Instead of getting a follow up trainer, I got a brand new missionary fresh off the plane! His name is Elder Sirrine, he is from Draper Utah.

Yep I’m “baby training” out of the two new English speaking Elders I got to train, and why me out of every one else in the mission? The other elder is being trained by an Elder in my MTC district who is a great man. Another Spanish speaking Elder who came out with me is training too. And then there is another Elder who has been out a while training the other Spanish speaking one. So out of 4 new Elders 3 of us are training right after we got done being trained. No one I talked to has seen that percentage of “baby trainers”. It is definitely going to be a fun two transfers training. If I do get to stay to finish training my son (yes we have “families”) both transfers I will have stayed in the same area for 6 months! That’s 1/4 my mission in one area!! But hey, I can’t complain, I love it here!

It will be an interesting experience for the both of us! We already had to find out way out of Kingwood TX (Houston) and get to Welsh in one piece without a GPS. And there are fun times that lie ahead! But we have The Lord with us and as long as we follow the spirit Elder Sirrine will turn out OK and I might make it through alive, well if we are following the spirit he will turn out to be a GREAT missionary and I will be strengthened as well!

This week has been full of rain! It rained for 3 days straight! I love the rain and bad weather though so I thought it was great! Our power went out Sunday night about 8 pm, after a loud pop crash noise that was not lightning. We went and looked outside, it was still pouring and all the lights on the street and surrounding buildings was still on, but our apartment complex was dark. It was on by 3:00 am in the morning when I woke up and found one light we missed and didn’t get turned off and of course it was the hallway light and it lit up our room.

I hope you are all having a great week! Be safe and always remember to center your lives on Christ. He will lead us to and through our next steps. I know that if we do that we will be blessed with more blessings than we can ever imagine. Christ’s Atonement works. The Book of Mormon is true. Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God. And Thomas S. Monson is the Living Prophet today. This Church is true! In the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Excerpt from letter home:

So after I got over the shock of the call to train, I got an over whelming peace and comfort telling me this is what the Lord wanted me to do. A few hours later I got the thought, “Who would trust a 12 year old (or 12 week old) to raise a baby?” almost immediately I got the thought, “The Lord would, so shut up and trust him!” So I’ve decided I will trust in the Lord and his judgment because I don’t feel qualified for it!

October 19, 2015 – Last Week of Training

Can anyone else believe I’ve been gone for 12 weeks!? Ok, well, 12 weeks in the field a little longer being gone from home.

So 1 week from today is transfers! So if anyone wants to send me a letter this week, don’t do it! Wait till next week and then I will be able to tell you where I am or if I even moved.

This week has been a good week. On Wednesday morning at 7:30, we got a visit from some Missionaries in the Baton Rouge Mission who we have been in close contact with, giving each other names of people to go see. It was their transfers so they wanted to come meet us in person! So they drove 50 Miles, out of their way, to come see us. Their names were Elder Rush and Elder Ralph.

Well, we did go “Mountain” biking. We went to Sam Houston State Park and there were hills. It was about 20 feet hills up and down through a forest next to a river. The river also had alligators in it and there is a warning sign on the trails saying watch out for alligators. But overall it was fun! The family we went biking with actually came to church! This was so exciting to see them there!

This week I learned of the importance of communication with family. We are watching a family go through a hard time. The single Mom (older lady) won’t tell her son (who is about 40) that she has cancer again. And there are a lot of financial problems going on that he doesn’t know about, and we have been asked not to tell. Now there is a lot more to the story which I’m not going to share but the point i want to expound on is that we need to communicate our problems with our family, no matter how old you or your kids/parents are. Even if we don’t want them to know it’s better to tell them than to let other problems arise. There is a quote from I think Ezra Taft Benson [1987 December Ensign, News of the Church, see link below], but he said, “It’s better to prepare and prevent, than it is to repair an repent.” Which can be used in a lot of situations. But in this case it is better to tell those close to us now, things they probably should know and will find out later, than it is to not tell and let the problem get worse and then have it blow up later! And that can also go with repentance. Talk to your parents, or bishop, or whoever, now. Don’t let the shame and guilt build up. We also need to take precautions (or prepare) to avoid the situations in the first place. The barriers are not to inhibit us but to keep us safe. There was a great talk on that last conference, by Elder Von G. Keetch, called Blessed and Happy are Those Who Keep the Commandments of God.  It’s GREAT, read it again! I know that through obedience to the commandments, our lives will be blessed more than we can ever imagine. That through Jesus Christ’s Atonement when we do slip and fall, He will pick us back up and when we stray off course and He will put us on the right path again if only we let Him, through prayer. I know Christ lives. I know he loves me and each of you. In the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

October 12, 2015 – Miracles do exist!

  • Companion: Elder Combrink

Well this week was amazing after conference! We talked to over 140 people! The mission’s goal is at least 70 a week and we decided to over double it!

Well I have 1 hour less than normal to email this week because we are going mountain biking…..Say what!? ……Mountains???… Where??? Well that’s a good question. We are going with a less active member. So I will soon find out!

Life is going by way, way too quick! We had a crazy week this week and had to reschedule or plans several times over! I got to climb up our walls to put a smoke detector up… that was fun!! And it was my companions 20th birthday! Which was fun because we got 20 trick candles, as well as 20 his mom sent him and we put all 40 in a small cake…. it took 2 mins for him to blow them all out because they kept relighting! The joy that brings to somebody when it is not you! Ha Ha! We also had interview training this week, which was interviews with the mission president and training when you were not in with him. They told us we were going to write a letter from our Father in Heaven to us. So they had us to go into the chapel and say a prayer to clear our thoughts and to be open to the spirit. Then to write the first things that came to your heart and mind. And that was a really spiritual experience! I can tell you that it really works and it really comes from your Heavenly Father. I couldn’t remember most of what I wrote, until I read it back later. It was like giving a blessing, just speaking the words that come to mind even if you don’t know where they are going and it happens to be something the person really needed to hear. This happened yesterday. I can witness to you that Gods power (the Priesthood) is really on the earth today! We gave a sister a blessing before a knee replacement a month ago and she is already up and walking with no pain at all (and she is a bigger lady). The doctors have never seen someone heal so fast before.

Miracles do exist! I know Christ lives and loves Me and each of you! I love you all!

October 5, 2015 – General Conference was AMAZING!

  • Companion: Elder Combrink

Well another AMAZING General Conference! So much stuck out to me I can’t even remember it all! It’s a good thing they have invented paper and pen! I want to challenge everyone to “Ponderize” and share with me their verse! Mine is D&C 10:5. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about here is the summary of the talk…

My Heart Pondereth Them Continually

Brother Devin G. Durrant
First Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency

General Conference, Sunday Afternoon Session, October 2015

I invite you to “ponderize” one verse of scripture each week. The word ponderize is not found in the dictionary, but it has found a place in my heart. So what does it mean to ponderize? I like to say it’s a combination of 80 percent extended pondering and 20 percent memorization. …

… Read or think of the verse several times each day and ponder the meaning of its words and key phrases throughout the week.

Imagine the uplifting results of doing this weekly for 6 months, a year, 10 years, or more. As you make this effort, you will feel an increase in spirituality. You will also be able to teach and lift those you love in more meaningful ways.

I can’t wait to hear what your scriptures are!!

This week was crazy! I got 15 holes in my back tire!! [Ran over a broken beer bottle, by accident.] Walmart here doesn’t even carry the right tube! My bike as the new fancy weird valve and they don’t sell it! So instead I had to patch 15 holes!!

I honestly don’t remember a whole lot about this week. It feels like the last 2 days of conference was the whole week and it was Amazing!! Hopefully I might be able to gather some thoughts for next week!

I want all of you to know that I sustain the new Apostles as men called of God, as well as President Monson as the Prophet and all the other General Authorities. I know they are all called of God and I would be willing to follow whatever they say because it comes straight from God!
